HHS has proposed the most significant updates to the HIPAA Security Rule in more than a decade, with a clear push toward stricter, enforceable cybersecurity requirements.
Stronger Safeguards, Fewer Loopholes All Security Rule safeguards would become mandatory, with full documentation required for every policy, procedure and analysis.
Encryption and Access Control Encryption for all ePHI and MFA across systems would become mandatory rather than optional.
Regular Cyber Health Checks Organizations would need to follow fixed testing intervals, including semiannual vulnerability scans, annual pen tests and annual compliance audits.
Clearer Risk Analysis Requirements A complete asset inventory, network map and annual risk review would be required to show where ePHI lives and how it’s protected.
Incident Response and Recovery Organizations would need tested response plans, 72-hour recovery for critical systems and documented access changes within 24 hours.
